What do Paul Newman, David Gandy and Tinie Tempah all have in common? Well, apart from being style icons, they’re also all au fait with donning a pair of white trousers.
I recently did a poll on Instagram, asking whether white trousers were part of your summer wardrobe or not. And the result was a fairly convincing no.
This didn’t come as a surprise to me as there is a stigma that exists around them and wearing them is often regarded as a moderately bold move.
However, I have a theory that people refuse to wear them because they’re slightly unsure what they represent and how others may perceive them. At the end of the day they’re just another pair of pantaloons, which can actually look pretty great in the summer (and all year round but we won’t get onto that today). So, I thought I’d make a case for them.
It Makes Sense
Guys, it’s summer.
Just as dark colours attract the sun, light colours reflect the entire spectrum of light. So, if we’re looking at this conundrum practically, a white trou choice makes perfect sense for keeping you cool.
Yet interestingly, I reckon the ratio of black jeans to white trouser on a British summer’s day is about 50:1. Do you guys enjoy the sticky sensation that comes from sweating in jeans…?
About The Fit
The elusive white trouser needs to fit correctly in order to get the most out of them (just like any other item in your wardrobe).
I’d advise you aim for a slim fitting leg that tapers in at the ankle. You’ll maintain a sleek silhouette and have the ability to wear fitted or looser items on top.
Never opt for baggy linen whites – they’re more middle-aged women vibes in my humble opinion.
Endless Pairing Options
I recently heard someone say the best combination a man can wear is black jeans and black trousers. It acts as a blank canvas from which you can express yourself in any way on top.
White is a neutral colour and presents a similar platform.
Whether it’s a fitted plain t shirt or a flamboyant Cuban collar shirt, it will likely pair well.
Wear With Caution
When wearing white trousers there is very small margin for error and the very real issue of them being almost impossible not to get dirty.
You can do yourself favours such as having them perfectly tailored, so they don’t pick up dirt from the ground, and Always try and keep your hands clean so dirt and crumbs don’t somehow find them on your quads, or on the tops of your pockets.
But on the whole, wear them wisely – I.e. not at a booze fuelled house party.
