Apparently yesterday was the first day of spring…usually something to celebrate, yet March through May is a funny one for us blokes. We start mentally preparing for the end of the winter sports season, gradually make the transition from red wine and Guinness to something a little more refreshing, and find ourselves in what can only be described as clothing no man’s land.
God bless our country and its tri-season days but heck, it makes choosing what to wear constant a head-f**k.
I can’t predict the weather, but I can recommend some staples to have in your wardrobe, which should serve you well throughout this confusing and unpredictable period (similar to what we’re experiencing right now – writing March 22nd 2020 BTW).
Denim Jacket
There’s a real debate about what brings more joy to humans at spring – baby lambs or the denim jacket...but I'll park that debate for now.
To be honest, this should be a regular fixture in your apparel game all year round. It’s such a classic item that offers amazing versatility and options.
Wear it on top of a t-shirt if you’re blessed with a warm spring day or underneath an overcoat should the winter weather sneak back into our lives.
Hoodie
In terms of my own personal wardrobe, the hoodie is back, albeit in a slightly different form. Band names and giant brand slogans have been vanquished, replaced by neutral tones, a slightly more fitted style and premium fabrics.
Again, this is such a versatile piece that can be worn beneath any jacket or gilet, or paired with anything from jeans, chinos and lounge pants.
And if that’s not enough, they’re so bloody comfy, especially if you invest in brands like Ami – the feel of their hoodies remind me of the softest baby chicks. One thing I’d say is stay away from black, as this won’t keep you cool as the weather heats up.
White T-Shirt(s)
The Paul Scholes of Britain’s male fashion scene – everyone knows how effective they are but for some reason the nation don’t use them nearly enough.
My wardrobes are filled with white t-shirts. Different styles, fits and sizes, ready to be worn with anything.
Unequivocally timeless and the best foundations for a strong Spring look.
Unstructured Blazer
Man’s best friend when formalising a look in warmer conditions. These gems are often made from lightweight fabrics such as cotton or linen, meaning you won’t overheat should the sun begin to beat down on you.
That said, they can be dressed down during colder times with the aid of the aforementioned neutral hoodie.
These jackets offer a more relaxed look, and I'd advise going down the route of a crew neck tee or cutaway collar shirt, tailored trousers and white sneakers
Chinos
Before you all start calling me a chino wa**er, give me thirty seconds to explain why you need a pair.
I get it, jeans and trackies are your number ones but sometimes you need to change things up. Neutral, five-pocket chinos are a great way to do this, as due to their simplistic look, you can be adventurous with what you wear on your top half.
Perhaps an exuberant piece of chunky knitwear, or a camo overshirt – they give you a canvas from which to express yourself via tops and footwear, and if you go slim-fit (which you should) they also maintain a strong bottom-half silhouette.
Enjoy spring when it comes!
