Lockdown Grooming with a Little Help from Our Friends

Updated: Apr 7, 2020

Anyone else starting to feel a little sluggish and somewhat bored with lockdown? Me too.

An unfortunate bi-product of boredom is laziness, with things such as getting dressed and personal grooming often falling by the wayside. And that's Never a good thing.

I have no doubt morning routines have been relaxed but it’s probably time to accept that this could go on for a while. Why not try and re-discover your routine? Or develop a better one.

In order to assist you, I’ve listed a few brands who can certainly help in this area and ensure you have the tools ready for battle against that scraggly beard and those tired looking eyes.

Kicking off with a bit of movie trivia; ever seen Die Another Day? Piers Brosnan's final hurrah as James Bond featuring a very farfetched storyline.

Anyway, near the beginning he turns up at a five-star hotel looking like an unkempt wreck - understandable having spent several months as a POW in North Korea. In true 007 style, by the next scene he's back to his clean-as-a-whistle, best. And boy, does he look good.

If you've let things slip and developed some unwanted fluff on your face, do what James would do and you'll feel a heck of a lot better.

Mühle offer an amazing range of quality grooming tools and products to add a premium edge to your home grooming experience.

I've spoken about clean shaving, now let's explore another route; beard growth and maintenance.

How about some words of wisdom from Kennedy & Co. founder, Darren Kennedy:

"If like me you are experimenting with your facial hair then you'll need a beard oil to get the job done and take your facial fuzz from scruffy to sleek. The Kennedy & Co hydrating beard oil is packed full of natural botanical oils including grape, jojoba, and spearmint which itself is a natural anti-inflammatory and calms down any irritation or redness post shave."
"From softening whiskers, to nourishing the skin, preventing irritation and “beardruff”, a good beard oil acts as a styling agent while keeping your beard smelling fresh."

- Kennedy & Co. Founder, Darren Kennedy

For the best results, apply a beard oil on a freshly showered face, when the pores are open.

One final point, the Kennedy & Co. eye gel can also do wonders for puffiness. Big help if you have a tendency to oversleep during lockdown and have early morning Zoom meetings!

Firstly, when all this blows over, I'd highly recommend visiting them to get your makeshift barnet trims amended by their expert team of barbers.

However, they also offer some super products that you can source online, making home grooming a little more rewarding.

Their beard moisturiser is brilliant, combating bristly hairs and keeping your stubble and the skin beneath it moisturised. Beard health is often overlooked - time to start taking it seriously.

When to use moisturiser as opposed to oil I hear you ask? It's a margin call but my advice would be when things start getting longer than 'stubble' switch from moisturiser to oil.

On top of that, I'd recommend a couple of sprays of their Black Tea cologne to rid yourself and your house of unwanted aromas, such as last night's (and this morning's) pizza.

For a time when Zoom quizzes and virtual dating are paramount, you need a short-term solution to make sure your hair is on point. Instead of me advising you how, I thought it better coming from an expert:

"Not everyone is going to want to get the clippers out and shave their head.
A good way to style hair as it grows is to apply your finishing product to slightly damp hair. After washing, comb or brush into its usual shape and allow to dry naturally. This will keep some of the volume under control and ensure you don’t end up getting frustrated by a bouffant. When it is about 80% dry rub some styling paste or a matt clay through the hair and mould into your style of choice. This is an ideal way of controlling the shape and ensuring you look smart if you are on a video call."

- Ruffians barber Nick Campbell

Two of their products to help you:

  • Hair Cream - a multi-purpose product – whatever your hair needs, it does! Use it on wet hair when you come out the shower or apply on dry hair when you feel the need. Its super easy to use and always gives great hair.

  • Matt Clay - the new generation of clays, achieving absolute hold, but with the flexibility of a softer product.

Second film reference, have you ever seen 'About a Boy'? Well, Hugh Grant's character (Will Freeman) splits up his days into thirty minute units of time to help map out his day, when there isn't much to his life.

If you're still bothering to shower (if you're not FFS pull yourself together) it's probably verging on one whole unit, just for the sake of killing time...so make it worthwhile!

Arm yourself with quality products and make the rest of your household jealous of your scent. Oliver J Woods' products can certainly help you there. Their deodorant stick combines long lasting protection with a sweet-smelling signature scent of Cedar, Sandalwood, Amber & Bergamot. That plus their body wash is a killer combo for ensuring lockdown cleansing.
