On the Topic of Men's Jewellery

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll have heard the (deserved) hype surrounding the literary and TV sensation ‘Normal People.’ It’s a contemporary and relatable love story that has fans so enthused, parody Instagram accounts have been created for the necklace worn by the leading male protagonist. 115K followers and counting...

In fact, the show’s costume designer has said the actor’s wearing of the ‘Argos Chic’ silver chain is Comparable to what James Dean did for the simple white T-shirt in the 1950s.” Talk about a chain reaction.

It got me thinking about men’s jewellery and the stigma that surrounds it. Some adore it, others are indifferent, and then there are those who view it as emasculating. I guess none are technically wrong, as it’s down to personal preference but I, myself, am a big fan.

Thankfully we’re starting to see blurred lines when it comes to the gender stereotyping of jewellery, and when a TV programme causes a 56% search increase for men's 'silver chains’ online, it definitely helps.

To save you from an extensive web search, I want to bring to your attention a fairly new jewellery brand, which has come to my attention for all the right reasons. Dion Dreyes.

An esoteric product, which perhaps challenges the status quo of the existing jewellery world, and that’s why I love it. I don’t believe men wear jewellery to blend in. In fact, I think we wear it to express ourselves – it’s a kind of personal symbolism.

The brand itself, stands for so much more than accessorising those whose body the jewellery adorns. Dion Dreyes gives 10% of every purchase to mental health charities, which I think is a lovely touch.

Their ‘Damaged’ collection is an ode to everyone who has battle scars and a tip of the hat to human spirit. The collection is a reflection of how we should wear and embrace our imperfections, whilst the designs represent a broken aesthetic, yet the quality is not compromised.

So, if you’re looking to embrace your inner Connell Waldron, support mental health, and break down personal barriers when it comes to jewellery, allow me to recommend Dion Dreyes as your starting point…
