According to a study carried out by Mckinsey during lockdown, two thirds of consumers are now more concerned about products being ethically and sustainably conscious than ever before.
This comes as no surprise and it’s actually very refreshing, so I thought I’d point you in the direction of some sustainably conscious brands.
And what better place to start than skincare? It’s an area disregarded by lots of blokes out there, but dermatology is, in my eyes, very important. Just like you only get one set of teeth, you only get one face, so best look after it.
And if you’re helping look after the planet too, then jobs a good’n.
I want to kick off with Kiehl’s, as not only are they a brand who have taken big strides in sustainability but they’re also a brand I'm a big fan of.
Through their ‘Made Better’ campaign, they’ve made a conscious effort to use more sustainably sourced and naturally derived ingredients, as well as responsible packaging and manufacturing.
Positive Steps They’ve Taken
Kiehl’s source some of nature’s most efficacious ingredients to help create formulas that are effective, yet suitable for all types of skin.
Natural Deriving Ingredients
Many of their products are formulated to include naturally derived* ingredients.
*Remains unchanged from its natural state or has undergone processing, yet still retains more than 50% of its molecular structure from its original natural source.
Today, 95% of Kiehl's formulas contain at least one natural (or natural origin) raw material.
Sustainably Sourced
The brand work alongside farmers and producers to source ingredients that are beneficial to their communities and the planet.
36% of their formulas contain at least one sustainably sourced raw material.
Recycled Materials
Kiehl's post-consumer recycled materials whenever possible, and reuse and recycle in stores. They encourage patrons to do the same and recycle empties through their 'Recycle & Be Rewarded' program.
By 2020, they are committed to including at least 30% post-consumer recycled materials in 100% of their saleable products packaging.
Responsible Packaging and Manufacturing
Kiehls' package design helps avoid waste in addition to using post-consumer recycled materials whenever possible. By 2020, the brand is committed to reducing CO2 emissions, water consumption and waste generation by 60% in US manufacturing plants.
Since 2005, they've reduced:
CO2 Emissions by 82%
Water Consumption by 21%
