The Shirt You Need This Summer: Cuban Collar

The Oxford shirt is a SS (Spring Summer) British staple, employed by lots of men as their key top half piece. They're often donned in conveyor-belt-fashion, featuring a wide array of colours and patterns, with the iconic button down collar a constant. And fair play, it is a great look.

But if you want to go against the grain a little this summer, opt for the Oxford's slightly cooler Caribbean brother; the cuban collar shirt. For me, if worn correctly, it's the preeminent summer option, utilised by the few brave enough to mix things up.

This is an old-school staple, heavily relied on by King Elvis in the 50s, which somehow lost its way for a while within the world of men's fashion - or so I'm told, it's not like I was around to witness this. It’s archetypal notch lapel and (predominantly) short-sleeve style has made a comeback in recent years and for now, should be a mainstay in your summer wardrobe.

One thing I want to stress. Please don't get this item confused with the novelty Hawaiian shirt.

In terms of materials, I'd say it's best to aim for the likes of poplin cotton or viscose. Let's also think about maintaining a lightweight feel to the rest of your outfit, to provide continuity with this warm weather look. However, if you pair with cotton chinos, don't sweat it. Or maybe do...

Style wise, as I mentioned earlier, it’s a super adaptable piece, with all of the below working well:

  • Untucked with a pair of lightweight trousers

  • Tucked into tailored trousers

  • Beneath a linen suit (Better with some kind of design on it)

  • Paired with white sneakers, loafers or birkenstocks

Reiss do this style of shirt exceptionally well, and have a wonderful collection currently available.

Whether you're into your jazzy patterns, or have a more minimalist colour palate, I'm pretty sure you're going to find one that ticks your boxes. If not, all the more for me.

Once armed with your cuban collar shirt, find yourself a spot by the sea, kick off your shoes and order yourself multiple Mojitos.
